Abstract
Purpose: This study was conducted to define the main factors influencing ego-integrity of the aged.

Method: The data was analyzed using a SAS program for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression. One hundred thirty seven elderly people over the age of 65 were recruited by self-selection from 6 areas in Korea from Jun. 20, 2003 to Aug. 15, 2003. The reliability of the 7 instruments were tested with Cronbach¢¥s alpha which ranged from .79 to .93.

Result: The results were as follows : The mean of total item scores of the ego-integrity scale was 3.46. There were significant correlations between all the predictive variables and the ego-integrity(r=.71 ? -.24, p <.01, p <.001 ). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that; a) self-esteem was the main predictor of ego-integrity and account for 50% of the variance in ego-integrity; b) perceived health status and social support accounted for 6%, and 4% respectively and all these variables accounted for 60% of the variance in ego-integrity.

Conclusion: It is important for the elderly to have positive self-esteem and to improve health status. Furthermore, we provide social support to the aged.
